  • Introduction: Cancer is the third leading cause of death and one of the most important causes of chronic disability in the world, which with its chronic and progressive course can affect the quality of life of patients in various dimensions. The aim of this study is to investigate hope therapy on the quality of life of elderly people with cancer.
  • Methods: The present study is a quasi-experimental design that was conducted in 1401 at the Oncology Center of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences. 54 patients with cancer were randomly assigned to two control groups (n=27) and experimental group (n=27). Participants in the experimental group received hope therapy during 6 sessions for 60 minutes, but the control group did not receive any intervention. Demographic questionnaires and SF36 quality of life questionnaires were used to collect data. The quality of life questionnaire was used and analyzed in three stages before and after the intervention and one month after the intervention (follow-up stage) in the two groups.
  • Results: Cancer patients with an average age of 55 ± 3 years participated in this evaluation. The results of this study showed that the research hypothesis that hope therapy has an effect on improving the quality of life of cancer patients has been confirmed, and the participants in the experimental group had a significantly better quality of life than the participants in the control group at the post-test, and the effects of the treatment were still maintained one month after the end of the intervention (P<0/05)
  • Conclusion: The results of the study indicate the effect of hope therapy on the quality of life of cancer patients. According to the results of this study; the use of a team approach, the need for cooperation between oncologists and psychologists, and attention to psychological interventions in addition to physical treatments are recommended in order to improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
