Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial infections affecting both males and females. UTIs can be caused by a diverse range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species. After various studies on patients with UTIs in different countries, it has been found that the viridans group streptococci (VGS) rarely cause UTIs. Nevertheless, the use of probiotics has demonstrated some effectiveness in preventing UTIs and can also be used alongside antibiotic treatment.
The primary objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the role of probiotics in the prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections caused by VGS. Additionally, this study aims to examine UTIs caused by VGS and explore the mechanisms by which probiotics may contribute to the prevention and management of these infections.
Methods: To address the objectives of this study, databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar were searched using terms related to Streptococcus viridans, probiotics, and urinary tract infections to find articles relevant to the research topic.
Results: The contribution of probiotics to the prevention and management of UTIs caused by VGS has not been definitively established. However, based on conducted studies, probiotics appear to be effective when used as an adjunct to antibiotics for the prevention and treatment of UTIs.
Conclusion: The investigation of Streptococcus viridans in causing a wide range of diseases, particularly UTIs, is of significant importance. Moreover, the impact of probiotics on the prevention and treatment of UTIs has gained considerable attention in recent years. The use and further development of probiotics are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the immune system and managing these infections in the future.
