  • Introduction: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the large intestinal mucosa that caused from an inappropriate inflammatory response. Antibiotics, corticosteroids, masalazine, and immunosuppressive drugs can be cured for this disease. However, these drugs are expensive and also have unpleasant side effects such as nausea, vomiting, headache and infertility. Curcumin is a polyphenol extracted from turmeric rhizome (Curcuma longa). It has strong and natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the purpose of present study is investigating the effect of curcumin on the recovery and repair of ulcerative colitis.
  • Methods: The present study was conducted by searching articles in Scopus PubMed, web of science SID databases using Curcuma Longa, Curcumin, Ulcerative colitis and Inflammation keywords without time limit in July 2019. Inclusion criteria are randomized controlled trials using curcumin as a treatment for ulcerative colitis inflammation and exclusion criteria are lack of access to the full text of the article and the combination of treatment. The quality of the articles was evaluated and the results were presented based on the mechanism of effect and rate of recovery.
  • Results: 59 articles were found after the search. After study abstract,20 articel were select for study. Studies have shown that factors such as oxidative stress lead to inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative colitis and since this type of disease is associated with chronic and recurrent inflammatory processes, therefore antioxidant compounds can be useful in the prevention and treatment of this inflammatory disorder. . Curcumin suppresses inflammation by reducing TLR4, MYD88 and NF-KB genes expression in inflammatory intestine tissue and improving ulcerative colitis symptoms.
  • Conclusion: According to the results of this review study, curcumin can be an effective, inexpensive and without side effects replacement for treatment of inflammatory intestine diseases such as ulcerative colitis and can accelerate recovery. Today several mechanisms have been proposed to increase the efficacy of this substance that should be further investigated.
