  • Introduction: Approximately 2% of all deaths worldwide are due to ischemic stroke. Oxidative stress caused by cerebral ischemia. Oxidative Stress Increases Free Radical Production and Reduces Antioxidant enzyme activity. Endogenous antioxidants including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) are effective in controlling free radical levels. Currently, the development and use of non-toxic drugs of natural origin has received much attention. Nostoc Commune extract is natural product that it has antioxidant properties. Aim of study is investigated antioxidant effect of Nostoc Commune on ischemia eperfusion (I/R) animal model.
  • Methods: 35 male Wistar rats weighing 200-250 gr were used and divided into 5 groups. First, the animals were anesthetized by intraperitoneal injection of ketamine and xylzine. After excluding the skin and muscles by identifying the carotid arteries and separating the vagus nerve and carotid body, both the left and right carotid arteries were selected and closed for 5 minutes by vascular clamps. Then remove the clamps for 10 minutes to continue the blood flow. Again, we blocked the carotid arteries for 5 minutes. Animals in I/R group were randomly divided into 3 groups including IR, N35 (35mg/Kg Nostoc Commune), N70 (70mg/Kg Nostoc Commune). 48 hours after I/R induction, antioxidant enzyme (CAT) was determined.
  • Results: The CAT levels in the ischemic Cortex were significantly decreased (P>0.001) in I/R group as compared with the control group. Pretreatment with Nostoc Commune (70 mg/kg) significantly reversed the increased CAT levels (P<0.01) as compared with the I/R group.
  • Conclusion: Our study showed a significant increase in antioxidant level after administration of Nostoc Commune in I/R rat model.
