  • Introduction: Brain ischemia involves a cascade of metabolic events, several of which initiate the generation of oxygen free radicals. Post-stroke depression is the major behavior of poor functional outcome after stroke. Nostoc commune Vaucher, a macroscopic cyanobacterium, has appreciated as traditional medicine worldwide. Its extract possesses effective antioxidative activity. Aim of this study was investigated anti-oxidative and anti-depression effects of extract of Nostoc commune in rat model of global cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R).
  • Methods: First, 40gr of Nostoc commune algae was placed on a shaker in 500cc methanol 80%. After filtering solution, we put it in Incubator. Animals were randomly divided into five groups including control, positive control (35mg/Kg Nostoc Commune), IR, N35 (35mg/Kg Nostoc Commune), N70 (70mg/Kg Nostoc Commune). Nostoc Commune were oral administrated to the rats 14 days before I/R induction. 48 hours after I/R induction, all rats were subjected to tail suspension test to determine depressive-like behaviors.
  • Results: Immobility time in tail suspension test significant increase and Nostoc Commune decrease this time compared I/R.
  • Conclusion: Our study showed a significant increase depressive-like behaviors in I/R rat and Nostoc Commune reverse this increase.
