• In vitro evaluation of antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of Zataria multiflora Boiss of and Malva sylvestris against oral pathogens

  • Introduction: Oral diseases such as caries are common problem in public health and can be caused by pecific species of bacteria. The use of natural products for the control of oral diseases has been as an interesting alternative to synthetic antimicrobials due to their lower adverse reactions, and to fight resistance to the drug during therapy. in this study effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Zataria multiflora Boiss of and Malva sylvestris has been determined against oral pathogens.
  • Methods: In this experimental study, ethanolic extracts have been prepared from Zataria multiflora Boiss of and Malva sylvestris with maceration method. Their antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans ATCC35668 ,Streptococcus sobrinus ATCC27607 and Streptococcus sanguinis ATCC1056 have been evaluated with broth macrodilution method.Data were analyzed with Mann-Whitney
  • Results: Minimum Inhibitory Concentration for Zataria multiflora Boiss of and Malva sylvestris were respectively 6.25 and 25 μg/ml, for Streptococcus sobrinus were 3.125 and 6.25 μg/ml and for Streptococcus sanguinis were 0.78 and 1.56 μg/ml.
  • Conclusion: Both extracts was found to be effective against oral pathogens and had growth inhibitory effect on all three bacteria. Zataria multiflora Boiss had significantly greater effect on inhibition of growth of all three bacteria
