• Adherence to treatment in elderly patients with hypertension: a cross-sectional study

  • Introduction: Adherence to treatment in patients with hypertension insures the success of treatment and reduces the adverse effects and severity of the disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment adherence in elderly patients.
  • Methods: current descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Tabriz in 2018. 50 elderly patients admitted to the Sina hospital were selected according to inclusion criteria and enrolled in the study after obtaining informed consent. Two questionnaires were used in this study; demographic and treatment adherence questionnaires which were completed by the interviewer. Data were analyzed by SPSS ver21 with p <0.05 as the level of significance.
  • Results: The Mean(SD) age of participants was 73.42(9/59) years and the majority of participants were women. Also, most of the participants (56.9%) had poor economic status and received low treatment adherence scores (92.3%) and only 7.7% of participants achieved an average score. the results indicated that there was a significant relationship between economic status and treatment adherence, with the improvement of economic status, the received total adherence score was improved as well.
  • Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that the majority of patients with hypertension do not adhere well to treatment and poor economic status is a major obstacle for achieving better adherence.
