  • Introduction: Episiotomy is one of the most common injuries during labor in primiparous women. Many studies have supported selective episiotomy. Midwives are frightened and stressed by serious injury to the perineum and by unknown and ambiguous judgments and lawsuits. One of the causes of midwives' job stress is due to traumas that occur during childbirth for clients. Stress, time constraints, concerns about poor performance, and lack of experience are factors that pressure the midwife to refrain from acting on evidence. Midwives need personal skills and develop coping strategies to respond to clients' needs. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between midwifery stress and selective episiotomy in primiparous women.
  • Methods: This is a descriptive correlational study that was conducted in Mashhad maternity hospitals in 2015. Initially, the researcher provided the midwife with the Codron Occupational Stress Questionnaire and collected their information, then collected information on the 120 first term births, headaches, singletons and anomalies delivered by the attending midwives. . Episiotomy information was collected by a researcher-provided checklist. Data were analyzed by SPSS 16 software. Mann-Whitney nonparametric test was used because the two variables were not normal.
  • Results: The results showed that occupational stress score in the group with selective episiotomy was 80.5± 34.0 and in the non-selective group was 85.32± 3 and the test showed no significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.087).
  • Conclusion: The present study showed that there was no significant relationship between selective episiotomy and midwife stress. Therefore, it is suggested that studies with more samples be conducted, examining other psychological skills, and even training them on midwives' performance.
