  • Introduction: Introduction: Iranian population has experienced a high population growth rate during 1976-1991.About 25 million people from this generation will reach aging during 2036-2051 and so confront lots of medical problems in those years. Physiological and structural changes of cardiovascular system is high in the elderly group with more prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of death in the elderly. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in the elderly people with myocardial infarction.
  • Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted on 120 elderly patients with myocardial infarction over 60 years old who were hospitalized in Rasht, 2019. Data were collected through a researcher made questionnaire, included demographic information and risk factors (such as hypertension, diabetes, smoking, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, a history of heart disease and poor physical activity) and its validity was measure by CVI, CVR. Data were analyzed by SPSS software and descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Results: The results showed that out of 120 elderly people with myocardial infarction the majority of them were men (72.56%). According to the prevalence of risk factors in men, smoking, 45% high cholesterol, 45% history of heart disease, 4.2% hypertension,% 33.6 diabetes was 16.3% The majority of the study participants (77.3%) rarely exercised.
  • Conclusion: High prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors such as elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides increased risk of other atherosclerotic risk factors and heart disease in the elderly people. Identifying and controlling risk factors is the first step in preventing these diseases. Older people seem necessary.
