  • Introduction: One of the main aspects of mental health is general health and happy living. Longitudinal studies have shown that dissatisfaction with life causes long-term health damage and increases mortality, suicide, unintentional injuries, disability at work, and diseases such as cardiovascular disease. One of the most important types of satisfaction is marital satisfaction. Marital satisfaction is the feeling of well-being in life after marriage. Inhalation of cigarette smoke involves both direct (active smokers) and indirect (passive smokers) chemical and toxic carcinogens and it can affect the environment of non-smoker people around smoker ones. Passive smoking has many detrimental effects on women, which have been proven by various studies, with the most well-known being lung cancer. It has been shown that exposure to cigarette smoke in the environment can adversely affect the health of the non-smokers by its toxic substances. Also in psychiatric counseling sessions, many women report that they hate smoking. If we can show that inhaling cigarette smoke can have an impact on marital satisfaction, it can increase the firmness of family foundations and have positive effects on the health and spirit of family members by informing families.
  • Methods: 199 housewives were subjected to pre-determined conditions and had smoker husbands that smoked at home, with 196 housewives having non-smokers husbands and they were not exposed to smoking by their husbands at home. They were divided into two groups and were assessed using a questionnaire containing 42 related questions. Finally, after collecting preliminary data and statistical analysis, Mann Whitney statistical test was used to answer the pre-determined research questions.
  • Results: After calculating the total score of the questionnaire, the mean, standard deviation and standard error of the two groups were determined. After statistical analysis, the results showed a higher rate of marital satisfaction in women who had non-smoker husbands compared to women who had smoker husbands. This difference was significant at a p-value of <0.001.
  • Conclusion: Not only does smoking have adverse effects on one's health but also the toxins in it threatens one's health, as well as its use being an actual gateway to drug use and various other social problems associated with it. We have shown that inhaling cigarette smoke can affect marital satisfaction. And we also increased this awareness that it can have negative effects on the strength of family foundations and the health of the body and soul of family members. Inhaling cigarette smoke in the family environment may seem to make a good impression on the smoker, but as the results of our study suggest, it can have adverse effects on marital satisfaction.
