  • Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease of the nervous system which is demyelinating neurons. MS usually occurs at the age of 20-50 and is more common in women than men. Using of stem cells play an important role in remyelination and help in preventing demyelination of the axons. So, the aim of this study investigating effects of stem cells in treatment of multiple sclerosis.
  • Methods: This review was performed within articles published at PubMed, Google scholar, Cochrane and SID from 2000 to 2019. The keywords were multiple sclerosis, stem cell, treatment. By searching this database and filtering title, 53 articles were found and 37 of them by reading abstract were removed. All articles chosen from English and Persian articles
  • Results: Finally15 articles were included in the study. In 9 cases reported that using stem cells basis of treatment of MS which reduces pain and other symptoms and also leading to remyelination neurons and restart the immune system. In 4 of them are expressed: none of the common treatments MS disease which is medication cannot lead to a complete recovery of this disease, only slow the progression, but using Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) indicates a high potential for MS treatment.
  • Conclusion: Stem cell transplantation in patients with MS is a cost effective and relatively safe clinical method, stem cells replacement alone don’t seem to be effective but by combining other therapies be more potential for the treatment of MS. Therefore need to be more research done at this topic.
