• Investigation the therapeutic effect of bone marrow stem cells in diabetic foot ulcer

  • Introduction: Diabetic foot ulcer is one of the most dangerous and serious complications of diabetes, so that 50 -70% of each type of amputation is associated with diabetic foot ulcers. It has significant economic and psychological burden for the person, the health system and the society. Although progressing in wound care observed, but don’t achieved good results for wound healing. Recently, treatment of stem cells has been taken as a new strategy for diabetic foot ulcers. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigating the therapeutic effect of bone marrow cells in diabetic foot ulcers.
  • Methods: This review was performed within articles published at PubMed, Google scholar, Scopus and SID from 2000 to 2019. The keywords were bone marrow, stem cell and diabetic foot ulcer. By searching this database and filtering title, 64 articles were found, 43 of them by reading abstract were removed. All articles chosen from English and Persian articles.
  • Results: Finally 21 articles were included in the study. In one study that performed on people with sever ischemia of the lower limb, they under transplantation with BMCs (bone marrow mononuclear cells) and TRCs (tissue repair cells), result showed that BMC and TRC can improve microcirculation and wounds, while it is an affordable and low risk method. Also in another study that aspirated the bone marrow of patient with diabetic foot ulcer, injected it directly in to the wound and around its and also used MSC (mesenchymal stem cell) in combination with it, after 29 days of treatment result showed: reducing the wound size, increasing in dermis vessels and wound healing
  • Conclusion: It seems that stem cells can be a promising treatment for diabetic foot ulcers and in comparison with the common treatment, faster recovery and reducing amputation of lower limb organ. But need to be more research done at this topic.
