• Prevalence of obesity and its relation with lipid profile in Borujerd, Iran

  • Introduction: Obesity and dyslipidemia is associated with an adverse cardiovascular risk profile. In developing countries, including Iran, the effects of these cardiovascular risk profiles have been overlooked. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of obesity and its relation with lipid profile in Borujerd.
  • Methods: This research is a descriptive-analytic study that was conducted randomly among middle-ages (30 to 59 years) in Borujerd in the fall of 2018. In this study, 750 pepole were evaluated and obesity estimates (BMI> 30 kg/m2) and its relation with dyslipidemia were studied. A questionnaire including demographic data, anthropometric indices, laboratory results (cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, TG) were completed for these subjects. Data were collected by the latest SPSS software was processed. Data were analyzed using independent t-test, chi Square and ANOVA.
  • Results: The prevalence of obesity in the population was 15.9% in men and 29.4% in women. Most obese people are in the age group of 40-44 years old. In this study, the prevalence of dyslipidemia in obese people (75.3%) and the most common lipid disorders in obese people are cholesterol levels above 200 mg/dl, and there is a direct correlation between obesity and high cholesterol levels above 200 mg/dl and triglycerides above 150 mg dl and Weight loss in obese resulted in a significant decrease in cholesterol levels.
  • Conclusion: The high prevalence of obesity and dyslipidemia among middle-aged people in Borujerd, indicate the necessity of prevention and performance of health promotion programs such az healthy diet and loss weight in obese people.
