  • Introduction: Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas tissue. Gallstones are known to be the most common cause of acute pancreatitis especially in eastern countries, including Iran. Pancreatitis can cause complications for the patient in its course. Different systems have been proposed as predictors of the severity of acute pancreatitis. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the factors affecting the severity of biliary pancreatitis and their association with complications in Iranian society.
  • Methods: It is a retrospective cross-sectional study which was performed on 160 patients with biliary pancreatitis. The dependent variable in this study is the severity of pancreatitis divided into two groups of complicated (local and systemic complications) and uncomplicated pancreatitis. The necessary data were extracted from the patients' files and evaluated by SPSS 22 software.
  • Results: According to the results of univariate analysis, there was a significant relationship between patients' age, gender, Ranson's criteria and CRP with disease complication. There was no significant relationship between BMI, CBD size, serum alkaline phosphatase, gallstone size and FBS with complication.
  • Conclusion: Biliary pancreatitis is one of the most common pancreatic diseases. Finding the relationship between the factors that affect the severity of this disease, especially in Iranian society, can lead to better rehabilitation and prevention of possible complications of this disease.
  • Keywords: Biliary pancreatitis, complications of pancreatitis
