  • Introduction: Introduction: Medicinal herbs, with strong antioxidant properties, are used throughout the world as a food and medicine. Recent studies indicate that Elaeagnus angustifolia extract reduces oxidative stress. Considering that brain ischemia is the third most common cause of mortality in developed countries, the aim of this study was to investigate the of neuroprotective effects of Elaeagnus angustifolia fruit against stroke-induced damage on the blood-brain barrier and the activity of glutathione peroxidase.
  • Methods: Methods: In this experimental study, 12 groups of male Wistar rats were used. These included: 2 control groups of saline, 2 sham groups, 2 groups of stroke, 2 healthy and 2 stroke groups at doses of 100, 150 and 200 mg/kg/day of extract. After 30 days of oral administration, the animals were exposed to the middle cerebral artery occlusion for 60 minutes. After 24 hours, the levels of glutathione peroxidase activity in the cortex and hippocampus, as well as the permeability of the blood-brain barrier in these areas were investigated.
  • Results: Results: Oral administration of Elaeagnus angustifolia fruit extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg in stroke model reduces the permeability of the blood-brain barrier in the cortex. Doses of 200 and 150 mg/kg of extract in the cortex and hippocampus; and a dose of 100 mg/kg in the hippocampus increase the activity of glutathione peroxidase.
  • Conclusion: Conclusion: The results of this study clearly show that Elaeagnus angustifolia fruit has a significant potential for stroke prevention between Doses of 200 and 150 mg/kg in the cortex and hippocampus. Considering the vital role of these two regions in memory and the excellent understanding, Elaeagnus angustifolia fruit can be a good candidate for the preservation of neurons in these areas against stroke.
