  • Introduction: Infertility, which is the absence of a child bearing after one year of marriage, is one of the most important health problems of various societies. One of the most important methods for reproduction in infertility treatment is IVF. In the IVF method, several embryos are placed in the uterus, so multiple births are the most common and serious complication of assisted reproductive techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology and its related factors in infertile women under IVF in infertility department of Imam Khomeini Hospital in Sari.
  • Methods: The present study is a cross-sectional study that was done on infertile women undergoing IVF during the years 1390-95. The required information includes the age of the mother, the number of oocytes, the number of embryos implanted in the uterus, the duration of infertility, the underlying condition of the mother, the complications following IVF for the mother and infants, and multiple births, maternal mortality. simple sampling from patients was done by medical records. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 21.
  • Results: The findings of the study showed that, 120 women under IVF that of which 52 cases (43.3%) had twin pregnancies and (12.5%) 15 had triplets, of which only 18 cases (15%) result in twin births and 2 cases (1.7%) result in triple birth. Patients with a mean age of 34.5 ± 6.26 years had no significant correlation between mother age and maturational pregnancies (P> 0.05). The highest number of embryos planted in uteri in this study was three embryos with the number (79.2). There was no significant correlation between the number of embryos implanted in the uterus and the number of oocytes retrieved by multiple pregnancies (P> 0.05)
  • Conclusion: Fertility using a traditional IVF technique with more than one embryo transfer leads to multiple pregnancies but does not result in multiple births because factors such as abortion during pregnancy result in loss of other fetus or all of them, Therefore, the transfer of only one embryo in mothers prevents the occurrence of multiple pregnancy and multiple births.
