Abstract

Introduction

Polycystic ovary syndrome(pcos) is one of the most common endocrine diseases among women during their fertility years . its prevalence is reported 5-10% in different studies. currently , the underlying reason of the disease is not fully understood. but many studies have shown that the polycystic ovary syndrome is associated with genetic and environmental factors. amh is secreted from the gonadal follicles which its serum level in women is indicative of the size of the follicular reservoir of the ovary. adult female pcos patients have a high level of amh associated with excessive growth in growing follicles. it is not clear whether these abnormalities exist before the onset of pcos?

Methods

This is a systematic review article. after searching in databases like proquest ، scopus, science direct , pubmed and google scholar with key words such as (amh،anti-mullerian hormone, daughters of pcos women، ovarian function, polycystic ovary syndrome), five full-text papers published in 2006-2012 were found. among these literatures two of them were cohort type studies and three were case-control ones. in these studies, serum amh levels was measured in post/pre-menarche females and then was assessed with enzyme immunoassay technique (immunotechbeckman coulter, marseille, france). in post-menarche females the serum amh level was measured in the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle (days 3-7) but in pre-menarche females there was no time limitations for the mentioned measurement. at last, data were collected and findings were summarized.

Results

According to the researches , high level of amh was observed in pcos groups from infancy to adulthood compared to the control group. high level of this hormone have been seen in the early infancy in low-birth weight and high-birht weight infants compared to normal-birth weight infants. while in other studies, there is no relation between the level of amh and birth weight in newborn girls from pcos mothers ,and also there was a negative relation between the birth weigth and amh levels in newborn boys from pcos mothers.

Conclusion

Generally, increased level of amh in girls from women with pcos, suggests an evidence related to the change in follicular growth during pre-puberty. but more extensive studies are needed for the generation of clinical significance of increased level of amh during pre-puberty in these girls,as well as its subsequent association with the evolutionary process of polycystic ovary syndrome. therefore, further studies are recommended.
