  • Introduction: Zolpidem is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent ,which is mainly indicated for the treatment of insomnia .The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of zolpidem on size of ovarian follicles of adult NMRI mouse strain.
  • Methods: In this experimental study we randomly divided thirty adult female mouse NMRI strain at into five groups. Zolpidem solution was prepared in distilled water at 5, 10, and 20 (mg/kg of body mass) doses, and 0.5 cc injections were done intra peritoneally every day for 14 days. The control group received no injection. The sham group received distilled water (as solvent of zolpidem) and treatment groups of 1, 2, and 3received doses of 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg. The mouses were killed one day after the last injection, and their right and left ovaries were separated and examined after the process of alcohol supply ,molding, shredding as well as Hematoxylin and eosin painting and The results were evaluated via the tukey-test, ANOVA by SPSS program.
  • Results: In this study the size of primary follicles ,atretic follicle in third experimental group showed significant increased compared to the sham and control .the size of developing graaf follicle, developed graaf follicle and corpus luteum in the second and third experimental group showed significant decreased compared to the sham and control.the size of primordial follicles showed no significant changes in the ovaries.
  • Conclusion: The result showed zolpidem dose-dependent concentration is affected on the size of ovarian follicles of adult NMRI mouse strain ,finally it causes the loss of cell division regulation.
