  • Introduction: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the neurodegenerative disorders. It caused by destroying dopamine-secreting cells. PD has no definitive cure but Surgery, using drugs, physiotherapy are the recommended treatments. Studies have also suggested using stem cell therapy. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate about stem cells effects on treatment of PD.
  • Methods: We searched on PubMed and science direct database from 2015 to September 2019 and found 59 articles that 35 of which were excluded from the research by investigating the titles and 13 others by checking abstract; finally, 11 articles are included in our study.
  • Results: Based on the studies, the cells that used were neural stem cells (NSCs) from fetal brain tissues, human embryonic stem cells (hESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), directly induced dopamine neurons, Olfactory ecto-mesenchymal stem cells (OE‐MSCs), human parthenogenetic stem cell-derived neural stem cells (hpNSCs), endometrium-derived stem cells (EDSCs), human endometrium-derived stem cells, human parthenogenetic embryonic stem cell and Trabecular Meshwork Mesenchymal Stem Cells. iPSCs was effective in animal models but have not been used in clinical trials. The results showed that using OE‐MSCs in neurodegenerative disorders can effect on neural regeneration and it was a source of dopaminergic neuron-like cells for treatment of PD. hpNSCs were tested in animal models and the results showed that hpNSCs were safe source cell. EDSCs were good source for stem cells because of the easily collected and they were dose-dependent.
  • Conclusion: Our recommended-treatment for PD is to use stem cells. There are different cell sources for this treatment that the effects of these sources need to be assessed in studies.
