  • Introduction: Erectile dysfunction (ED) recognizes as a disorder in Keeping the erection constant. ED may have decreased quality of aliveness as well as decreased sexual function (SF) in adult males. The overall prevalence of ED has been estimated at 18% to 47% in the US. Methadone and buprenorphine are used as an alternative drug in the treatment of addicts. ED is common in patients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) and buprenorphine maintenance therapy (BMT). Buprenorphine is also distinguished as a suitable alternative in the treatment of addicts. Methadone or buprenorphine replacement therapy can have a great positive impact along with a person's social relationships. In this article, we are going to examine ED in men receiving buprenorphine and methadone.
  • Methods: The search was done by keywords in the databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane, from inception until 2017. At the PubMed, 18 articles were received. By studying the title of the articles, 9 articles were selected. By studying the abstract of the articles, 3 articles were selected. At the Google Scholar, 00 articles were obtained, 10 articles were included. At Cochrane, 8 articles were in English.8 review articles were identified and all removed. Finally, we review 13 articles in this study.
  • Results: The final inspection was performed on thirteen articles. All 13 study articles reported that there was a relationship between methadone or buprenorphine replacement therapy and ED. 5 papers examined the dose-relationship between alternative medications while One article reported a disconnect between the dose of methadone or buprenorphine. 2 articles reported an association between the duration of alternative treatment and erectile dysfunction, however one article disagree. Also, one article describes the lack of association between testosterone levels and MMT but one article violates this.
  • Conclusion: MMT or BMT has a substantive effect on ED in men. Outcomes indicate that buprenorphine maintenance therapy has fewer sexual side effects than methadone. Because of the different answers in some studies, more comprehensive research is required. It is advocated to use buprenorphine replacement therapy as much as possible instead of methadone replacement therapy.
