  • Introduction: Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine are modern therapeutic method which are increasingly used today. Platelet lysate is an emerging hemodrivative material that has become increasingly popular in recent years. This product contains higher amounts of proteins, growth factors, cytokines, and chemokines compared to platelet-rich plasma and can be stored at -70 ° C for a long time. Other features of platelet lysate include the preparation cost-effectiveness easy handling and removal of platelet membranes and the leukocytes that can cause inflammatory reactions. Platelet lysate is used in various medical fields such as tissue engineering, remedial medicine, stem cell culture for cell therapy as well as treatment of various diseases such as alopecia, wound and ulcer healing, bone formation, elbow pain, osteoarthritis and ocular disease. It can also be implemented for the treatment of periodontal, oral, orthopedic diseases, and maxillofacial surgery. Platelet lysate has the high levels of growth factors and cytokine. These growth factors are involved in growth, proliferation, cell differentiation and tissue repair and enter the platelet lysates through the lysis of platelet membranes.
  • Methods: This review study, reviews articles published in the last two decades on the use of platelet lysates in various fields of medicine such as tissue engineering, regenerative medicine and stem cell culture. In this study, we investigated the preparation method and effects of platelet lysates, their effect on cells and tissues, as well as the clinical applications of this product in stem cell culture and tissue repair.
  • Results: Studies indicate that platelet lysate induces its effect on growth factors and cytokines released by granules inside the platelets. Platelet lysate can induce organ regeneration, angiogenesis, vascular remodeling, tissue repair, apoptosis balance, proliferation, growth and cell differentiation by their growth factors and cytokines without tumorigenesis.
  • Conclusion: Platelet lysates with high levels of cytokines and growth factors can be an appropriate substitute for hemoderivative material for cell culture, regenerative medicine, tissue repair and tissue engineering without the worry of transmitting xenoviruses. However, the method of production and its growth factors must be optimized, so that high levels of growth factors do not cause tumors and malignancies.
