  • Introduction: To day Bacterial resistance to antimicrobial agents, is one of the important problems in Nosocomial infections. Allium cepa as a valuable medicinal plant is that has long been used to treat diseases. The aim of this study was to identify the evaluation of Allium cepa essential oil antibacterial activity on Listeria innocua, Candida albicans in vitro.
  • Methods: In this paper, the allium cepa essential oil,was extracted using Disk diffusion method was used to measure the diameter of the inhibition zone, and broth microdilution method was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and The components of the essential oil, were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry(GC/MS)device.The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), was determined using tubes or wells, where no color hange was observed.
  • Results: The results showed that, 20 compounds, were identified in Allium cepa essential oil. The major compound of the essential oil was Trisulfide, dipropyl (20.67%), Disulfide dipropyl n-decane(16.8%) and Furfuryl methyl sulfide(10.59%). The diameter of inhibition zone for bacteria Listeria innocua, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ,Candida albicans were obtained 16.4,14.8 and 18.6 mm, respectively. MBC of Allium cepa essential oil for Listeria innocua and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 512mg/ml and for Candida albicans, was 1024mg/ml, respectively.
  • Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the Allium cepa essential oil has antibacterial effect, which is higher in comparison with antibacterial effect of Tetracycline and lower in comparison with antibacterial effect of vancomycinand gentamicin antibiotics. Thereforer Allium cepa essential oil can be presented as a new antimicrobial compound of the essential oil.
