The nutritional benefits of pistacia atlantica

Abstract


Introduction

Pistacia atlantica mutica is a genus of the family anacardiaceae which consist of different parts such as fruit, leave and the resin with therapeutic effects. this review aims at summarizing the possible effects of different parts of pistacia atlantica on some diseases.

Methods

Our search was carried out in "pubmed" ,"google scholar" , "medline" and "isi web of science" databases . the key words used for the search were: pistacia atlantica in combination of diabetes, liver, antioxidant, anti-microbial. following the search strategy, 30 eligible articles were identified.

Results

The kernel and hull of pam are rich sources of mufa and antioxidants even more than olive oil. high content of tocopherols, carotenoids, phenols and phytosterols of this fruit can have preventive effect against cancer and cardiovascular diseases. due to high content of oleic acid of the fruit, it can decrease ldl-chol, tg and vldl, without any changes in hdl. furthermore the leaves of the tree have some anti-amylase and anti-glycosidase properties which explain anti-diabetic effect of that. the resin of the plant has anti microbial effect to prevent dental plaque formation and lethal effects against gram negative and positive bacteria.

Conclusion

Pistacia atlantica plant is a main source of mufa, antioxidants, phytosterols and antimicrobial properties which can have beneficial effects on features of diabete, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory disorders and dental disease. therefore, in order to increase the validity of results in this review, further studies should be conducted.
