Abstract

Introduction

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the five most common causes of hospital infections and death the worldwide. the excessive use of antibiotics has led to generation of drug-resistant staphylococcus aureus. extract of plants have been traditionally used for treatment of different infections because of their antimicrobial activity.

Methods

In this study, antimicrobial activity of hydroalcoholic extract of fig was investigated against 60 strain of staphylococcus aureus in comparison with vancomycin, cephalexin, ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, meticillin, choloramphenicol and co-trimoxazole drugs using disc diffusion and microdilution broth methods in accordance with clinical and laboratory standards (clsi m100,s17).

Results

The results showed a suitable activity against s. aureus with inhibitory concentration values in the range of 6-11 mm and minimum inhibitory concentration (mic) 2.81 to 5.62 mg.ml for extract of fig. %100 of studied strains were suseptible for choloramphenicol and vancomycin whereas, ,%5,%27,%24,%24 and %34 of strains were resistant to ciprofloxacin, cephalexin, ceftriaxone,co-trimoxazole and meticillin, respectively.

Conclusion

With regard to results, hydroalcoholic extract of fig showed the moderate antimicrobial activity against staphylococcus aureus . choloramphenicol, vancomycin and ciprofloxacin were appropriate drugs against the studied bacteria. further studies are required to evaluate the therapeutic values as in vivo.
