Abstract

Introduction

Today, due to the complications caused by the treatment with chemical drugs, the scientists focus on to use of complementary therapies including traditional and herbal medicine. tannins are the most efficient product in this field.

Methods

. ellagitannin is an important hydrolysis tannins group that is hydrolyses to the ellagic acid again ellagic acid metabolized to urolithin. ellagitannin has antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-atherosclerotic properties, and is found within fruits such as pomegranate, strawberries, raspberries and different nuts.

Results

. therefore, based on the cytoprotective properties and antioxidant capacity of this compound, it is recommended to use it in experimental models of diseases and clinical trials.

Conclusion

The studies shows that the consumption of the foods rich in ellagitannin and ellagic acid has protective and therapeutic effects in some non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular, renal, neurological, hypertension, diabetes and cancer. in breast and colorectal cancer, its polyphenolic metabolites can prevent the cell proliferation through altering of the cells cycle and apoptosis. in autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, ellagitannin prevents progression of hypoglycemia and infiltration of immune cells to langerhans. also, it attenuates the production of inflammatory cytokines il-17 and ifn-c. ellagitannin decreases heart necrosis and blood pressure and declines lipid peroxidation in renal ischemia, decreases oxidative stress markers and cholesterol accumulation.
